Guidlines for Students - Rules & Procedures

1. Full time attendance is compulsory. All absences have to be accounted for by a note or a telephone call from a parent or guardian. No notification will result in an unauthorised absence, which may be pursued by the Education Welfare Officer. Leave of absence, to attend interviews or medical appointments other than emergencies, should be sought beforehand.

2. Disruptive or unacceptable behaviour in lessons, around the school or on the journey to and from school, will result in students being placed in after school detention, undertaking community service, or face possible exclusion.

3. Any student who physically or verbally abuses a member of staff may be excluded with the option of permanent exclusion. Incidents of physical abuse will be reported to the Police for further investigation.

4. Any student having an involvement with, or believed to be involved, with alcohol, tobacco or other illegal substances between the time of leaving home for school and returning home after school may be excluded as a deterrent to possible offenders, and for the protection of other students.

5. Any deliberate act of vandalism or theft of school property or another person's property, will result in detention or exclusion depending on the severity of the offence.

6. Students considered to have committed an act of sexual harassment or racism towards another student or member of staff will be excluded with the option of permanent exclusion depending on the severity of the offence.

7. Any student who is proven to have bullied other students will be placed in after school detention or be excluded depending upon the severity of the incident.

8. Any student fighting or causing fights, or any behaviour likely to bring the school into disrepute, whilst at school or travelling to and from school will be placed in after school detention or be excluded, depending upon the severity of the incident.

9. Any student who is a proven truant or persistently late, will attend after school detention. Persistent offenders will be referred to the Educational Welfare Officer and either the student or their parents may be prosecuted for non-attendance at school.

10. Students who arrive in school at any time after registration for whatever reason must sign their names on an official signing in slip. Similarly, if any student leaves school for any reason he/she must sign the book provided at student reception. There are to be no exceptions to this rule. Students arriving in school before 8.15am, may only enter the canteen area of the building.

11. Students are expected to bring appropriate equipment to all lessons, presenting work of the highest possible standard in school and meeting deadlines for completion of homework and coursework. Detention will be given to students who fail to meet these requirements.

12. Any student who is ill must report to the school nurse who will then make the appropriate arrangements for the student's collection from school by parents. Students must not contact parents themselves to arrange for collection.

13. Students may place their bags and other belongings in the hall at the end of lesson 3 for the duration of the lunch break. No valuable should be left unattended. Coats may be taken into, but not worn, in the canteen, during the lunch break.

14. Full school uniform is compulsory and it must be worn correctly both in school and on the way to and from school. Failure to comply could result in children being placed in detention or being excluded. Non-school uniform or disallowed items of jewellery will be confiscated and returned to parents. The school's policy on Security, Health and Safety will be paramount when considering which items of clothing and jewellery are acceptable. Girls are allowed to wear one stud or one small earring in each ear. In the interest of safety boys are not permitted to wear earrings. Other types of body piercing are not allowed. Trainers are not allowed except for physical education lessons. In the interests of security students are advised to keep their coats with them. Leather or leather look-alike, or denim coats are not allowed. Top coats should be of a sober colour. Bright stripes or flashes of colour are acceptable. In the interests of security, expensive 'designer type' coats and trainers should not be brought to school.

15. Radios, personal stereos, chewing gum or any articles deemed unnecessary or dangerous are banned from the school premises. Offending pupils will have articles confiscated by Senior Staff. Such articles will be returned to parents.

16. Students may enter classrooms prior to the arrival of their teacher, (with the exception of laboratories and workshops) at the start of lessons, but must sit down quietly at their desks until their teacher arrives.

17. WET WEATHER PROCEDURES. Students should not remain outside whilst it is raining. Prior to the start of school students should remain in the hall, canteen, cloakrooms or corridors. During morning break the canteen is available for Years 10-13, the hall and corridors are available for Years 7-9. During the lunch break, the hall and corridors are available. In severe weather students will be asked to use certain classrooms.

The highest standard of behaviour is therefore expected of students both on buses and at bus stops. Where seat belts are provided, they must be worn. Students should not leave their seats other than for leaving buses at designated stops and then only after the vehicle has come to a halt. Students must not approach an oncoming bus until the vehicle is stationary.

THE OBJECTIVES OF THE ABOVE GUIDELINES ARE TO PROMOTE AMONG ALL STUDENTS SELF DISCIPLINE, A PROPER REGARD FOR AUTHORITY AND FOSTER AN APPRECIATION OF THE RIGHTS OF MEMBERS OF THE SCHOOL AND ITS COMMUNITY

The Headteacher's discretion is final with regard to circumstances which may fall outside of these broad guidelines.
