Homework

The school regards regular homework as an essential part of the educational process, and a means of helping the individual develop independent learning skills as well as providing important follow-up tasks to classroom activities. In addition, from the point of view of teaching staff, it is a valuable part of assessment.

It is our aim therefore to ensure that homework should:
be an integral part of the teaching/learning process;
enhance and reinforce the work in hand;
be meaningful and follow on naturally from a preceding lesson;
take into account group and individual abilities;

and that students should:
know what is expected of them;
be clear about the layout demanded;
be given adequate time to complete homework in a worthwhile manner;
be encouraged to seek extra information when explanations have not been understood;
understand the marking criteria and how their performance could be improved.

We would encourage parents to play an active part in this vital part of the student's education by keeping a watchful eye on the regular completion of homework. Each student is issued with a Link Book in which to record homework, and we would ask parents to check and countersign the book each week. The following table shows the maximum amount of time students should spend on each homework. Staff do not expect students to spend hours on each individual item.

Homework Requirements

7 3 20-25 minutes
8 3 25-30 minutes

Students should be encouraged to aim for at least one hour per subject each night.
